Joshua Tree
Thousands of monzogranite domes scattered across the high Mojave.
Checking the forecast…
Joshua Tree is not one cliff but several thousand granite formations pushed up out of the desert, most of them under thirty metres and most of them climbed on gear. The rock is famously abrasive and the grades are famously stiff: a Joshua Tree 5.10 has humbled a lot of visiting sport climbers. Climbing concentrates around the Hidden Valley and Barker Dam area in the park's north-west, with Indian Cove on the far side of the ridge and outlying formations everywhere. It is a winter destination; summer is genuinely dangerous heat. Bring a rack, a helmet and more tape than you think.
