Devils Tower
A single volcanic monolith of parallel cracks rising out of the Wyoming prairie.
Checking the forecast…
Devils Tower is one formation and one kind of climbing: parallel-sided columns of phonolite porphyry giving crack after crack, mostly in the 5.9 to 5.12 range and mostly protected on gear. Routes are approached by a trail that circles the base, and almost everything tops out on the summit meadow. The monument sits alone above the Belle Fourche River with the nearest real town at Hulett or Sundance. The Tower is sacred to more than twenty Northern Plains tribes, and there is a long-standing voluntary climbing closure through June that most climbers respect.
